Sounds Sensible® is a highly successful, systematic, multi-sensory reading and language arts program based on the Orton-Gillingham philosophy, making it uniquely effective as part of an intervention, a remedial, or an inclusion reading program. Designed as the first level of the S.P.I.R.E. program, Sounds Sensible is also used as an independent phonological awareness and beginning phonics program in Grades Pre-K–1.

The Professional Development for Sounds Sensible/Pre-Level 1 focuses on how best to develop phonological awareness, early phonics, oral language and handwriting skills for young at-risk readers.

At a one-day Sounds Sensible workshop, participants will gain the skills to effectively teach Sounds Sensible. In this interactive workshop, participants will:

  • Review characteristics of young children at risk

  • Obtain background knowledge of consonant sounds and single vowels and learn strategies for helping students produce them correctly

  • Explore the scope and sequence of young readers and learn where to place them in the Sounds Sensible program

  • Understand the importance of rhyme and activities to develop rhyming skills

  • Learn the necessary foundations for acquiring reading skills and how to implement the Sounds Sensible Lesson in small groups, practicing each of the 5-step lesson plan, which includes direct instruction and activities in:

  1. Listening

  2. Rhyming

  3. Segmenting

  4. Understanding phoneme/grapheme relationships

  5. Taking dictation

  6. Optimize the use of the materials included in the Sounds Sensible Kit

  7. Learn how to plan and write Sounds Sensible Lessons with the easy to follow lesson planner

  8. Practice the multi-sensory teaching techniques utilized in the 5- step Sounds Sensible Lesson Plan

  9. Discuss pacing and progress monitoring strategies
